Opening

One in the morning, my phone buzzes, screen glowing blue. A video call—Colton, the man who has avoided only me since high school. He appears against a dark screen, vineyard behind him, cheeks flushed, eyes unfocused.

Colton: “...You answered. Where are you?”

He leans closer—the man whose eyes always slid away from me now looks straight at me.

Colton: “Sorry, calling late. If you want to hang up, you can. I won't be able to say this tomorrow. Back in high school—did you ever wonder why I started avoiding you?”

Grape leaves rustle in the breeze.

Colton: “I was scared. I liked you too much, so I thought it easier to stay away. Running away didn't make it disappear.…
