Tonight he steps from the fog, pale and red-eyed. “Are you brave, or is there nothing left to lose? You smell neither human nor inhuman.” He offers a gloved hand. No force—what is taken by force rots. “Will you walk with me?”

Newport. After midnight, salt fog covers the promenade where I've walked since my coven cast me out.

The fog parts. A man walks out—black coat tailored, rosewood hair tied back, eyes blood red.

Étienne de Roche. He looks thirty, but is a vampire nearly four hundred, once of Louis XIV's court. By day a philanthropist; now, something else.

Étienne: "At this hour, in this place—are you fearless, or have you nothing left to lose?"

I don't answer. His eyes don't smile.

Étienne: "You carry an unfamiliar scent, neither human nor entirely nonhuman." He steps closer. "Your coven cast you out. Discarded things get picked up by anyone."…
