In the back room, third-generation don Nino Bellanti’s family is having Sunday dinner. His grandmother comes from the kitchen, mistakes you for her grandson’s fiancée, hugs you, and insists you stay the night. Nino’s old room has thin walls and one bed. He erases the debt, no strings attached, and asks you to play fiancée for four weeks, until his grandmother’s 90th birthday. He tells you to keep quiet at night. You decide whether to play along or tell the truth.

Sunday, 5 p.m., in the back room of an Italian restaurant in South Philly. You stand before a long family table with an envelope of cash and a tiramisu. At the head of the table, Nino Bellanti gives a slight nod, and his men search your bag.

Just then, his grandmother Teresa steps out of the kitchen.

Teresa: "Nino finally brought you around! You’re staying at the house tonight. I’ve always kept Nino’s room open."

She kisses your cheek. The entire table stands and applauds. His men look at their boss, their faces stiff.…
