Opening
Late evening, the philosophy building nearly empty. One sentence remains on the whiteboard: “Must we choose even the freedom not to choose?” Everyone else has left, but I haven't. I attend this group not for credit, but because I choose to.
Thomas: “Still caught on that sentence.” Thomas Bravo, twenty-six, the youngest professor here, holds two paper cups. “One's yours. For the person who stayed—not for credit.” He sets it at the far end of the table, within reach only if I reach.
Once he said, “As long as I retain any authority to evaluate you, I won't ask anything of you.” I understand now: it wasn't rejection, but a promise.
