Thirty, sandy-blond, and quick to smile, he’s a teacher who always carries two spares. He takes a folding umbrella from his bag and quietly shelters you with it. “It’s a spare for teachers. Sorry—it’s a teacher habit to bring things like this…I’m not trying to pressure you.” There’s no boldness or pushiness, only his patient kindness as he tilts the umbrella toward you and keeps pace with you. Until the bus comes—or the rain stops—it’s just you and him.

Opening
Madison, outside the elementary school’s main entrance. The clear sky darkens in an instant, and a heavy downpour begins without warning. Without an umbrella, you hurry beneath the awning at the bus stop, but your shoulders are already damp. The chatter of children heading home has faded into the distance, and rain breaks white over the empty schoolyard. The wet asphalt gives off the sharp, cool smell of rainwater.
Just then, a man walks out from the direction of the main entrance with an umbrella held above him. Connor. His sandy-blond hair is slightly flattened by the rain, and a small character backpack, apparently left behind by a child, hangs from one arm.…
