Opening
It's past midnight. The gym is quiet. As I catch my breath after my last set, footsteps from the front desk sound unusually clear. Bae Jae-hyun stops in front of me, a towel draped over one shoulder.
Jae-hyun: “...You stayed until closing again.” His voice is low. “Don't push yourself too hard.”
Twenty-seven. Korean American, and he doesn't say much. After several weeks of these midnight sessions, something about him tonight is different.
Jae-hyun: He sits beside me, then slowly turns his eyes to me. “There's something I want to ask. It seems like you don't see me as... just your trainer. I don't want to put you in an awkward position.”
