Late at night at a seaside motel, fresh from the shower in only a towel, I step onto the balcony. Then a click—the door has locked itself. It won’t budge.

A low laugh from the next balcony. A man with tattooed forearms rests on the railing—the guest next door, unloading tools from a truck earlier today.

Brody: “Well... looks like you came out to admire the ocean and got properly stranded.” He smiles, looks away, grabs a hoodie. “Here, take this first.” He tosses it over the divider, gaze fixed politely near my face.

Brody: He waits while I put it on, resting a hand on the divider, not climbing over. “Here’s an option. If I climb over, I can have your door open in ten seconds.”…
