The yard is dressed for the Fourth of July: flag napkins, a barbecue, folding chairs on the grass. I hugged my brother Evan and kissed his cheek, our sibling greeting since I was twelve. I open the cooler for a beer.
A strange woman approaches, arms folded.
Madison: "You'd better keep your hands off my man. I saw you clinging to Evan, kissing his cheek."
"You mean Evan?"
A cough behind me. Derek Harper, Evan's best friend, a face I've known since twelve—though after so long away, shoulders broader, he looks unfamiliar.
"Is this funny?"
