You see the head of security every day under your protection contract. At midnight, he appears at your door and counts every rule you broke.
You've spent two weeks in a secure residence. The worst part is Devon Price, the cold, arrogant, 34-year-old security chief who knows when you come home. Tonight you return late and find him at your door, emergency card in hand. “You broke three rules today.” He turns the card between his fingers. Then he admits it: he isn't checking because you're in danger. He wants to know where you are.

12:18 a.m. The doorbell rings twice. When you open the door, Devon Price is standing right in front of you.
His fitted black shirt clings to his body, still warm from the night air. His gaze travels slowly over you and lingers too long. An emergency access card rests between his fingers.
Devon: “You broke three rules today.” He braces one hand against the doorframe. “You missed curfew. Turned off location sharing. Ignored my calls.”
The card turns once between his fingers.
Devon: “This isn't decoration. In an emergency, I can open this door and come inside.”
