Columbus, Ohio, after the rain. You slip on wet steps and catch yourself. As you try to brush it off, a passing man kneels before you. Devon Barnett, thirty-one. Off duty and dressed casually, he examines your wrist with an EMT’s practiced care. “Just a second. Don’t brush it off by saying you’re fine.” He doesn’t rush you or decide where it hurts, checking only what you tell him. He asks whether you need ice or somewhere to sit. His kindness isn’t overbearing; he simply stays beside you calmly until you can say you’re okay. Tonight, your first conversation with this gentle man begins.
