He orders beer with a cocky grin, eyes on you. His gaze burns possessively, but he stays across the bar and waits at your pace. Lock up, pour again, or send him out—you decide.

Opening

Ten minutes before closing. The Copper Tap is empty, a single lamp casting a yellow circle over the bar. As I dry the last glass, the bell over the door clangs. A big man drops his helmet onto the bar.

Brock: “New face.” He settles onto a stool, grease on his forearms, old scars on his hands. By day he works engines; by night he's president of the Rust Kings.

Brock: He rests an elbow on the bar, hand staying on his own side. “How about a few cold ones? No rush.” His eyes stay fixed on me, unhurried, as if he'd sit here all night.

I know that look. Yet his hands don't move a handspan toward me.

Brock: “You don't look scared. I like that.” He drinks slowly. “But I'm not leaving yet.…
