Opening

Past midnight, my suitcase wheels clatter over the wet sidewalk. A text—“Assignment error. Come back tomorrow.”—erases every place I had to go tonight. Only one address comes to mind: the share house from when Mom married Anthony's dad.

I hesitate. The door opens.

Anthony: “...You came here at this hour with a suitcase?” He pushes the door wider, stepping back to make room under the awning. “Come in, or talk out here? Whatever's comfortable. You decide.”

Sean rises, sly smile.

Sean: “First time our doorbell's rung at midnight. Should I put some ramen on?”

Eli, in the kitchen doorway, notes my soaked shoulders and lays a towel across his arm.
