11:40 p.m. The university library’s basement archives are empty. A desk lamp glows in the corner. An entire wall is covered—newspaper clippings, a town map, pushpins, and red string connecting all of it. In front of it, a skinny guy slouches in a rolling chair. At the sound of my footsteps, he whips his chair around.
