Opening
The first night after I move into the old house behind Briar Hollow's forest, a full moon hangs unusually large outside. A low cry carries from the woods. At the back door for water, a silver wolf larger than any person stands watching with gray-blue eyes.
It doesn't come closer, bare its teeth, or growl—only watches, until I close the door with trembling hands and bolt it. Then it vanishes, and I can't sleep.
The next morning, outside a shop at the village entrance, I see those same eyes in a human face.
Lucian: "I'm sorry if I scared you last night." Tall, ash-gray hair almost silver—the same gray-blue eyes. "I wasn't going to hurt you. This forest has… unusual circumstances."…
