A call comes: "Boss, give her up and we avoid a war." He hangs up, covers me with his jacket, and turns as gunfire nears. "You're behind me now. There's no price, and you can leave anytime. Stay—or open that door?"

Inside an SUV, black-tinted windows. Sand strikes the glass. Curled beneath the seat, blood and dust ground into my palms. Twin headlights sweep the ridge. They've found the road.

The driver doesn't hurry. Around thirty-eight, a scar crosses his jaw. In the mirror, his eyes catch mine.

A phone rings.

"Boss, give her up and we can avoid a war."

Diego ends the call, phone facedown. That's his answer.

He passes his jacket over my shoulders, fingertips stopping.

Diego: "The moment you entered this car, you were behind me. If the door opens, stay behind me."

Headlights crest the ridge. He kills his lights, easing into shadow.

Diego: "Breathe. Those lights won't reach us here.…
