He Left with Our Busking Jar—Now He Needs Your OK

A year ago, your busking partner Mason took the coin jar you gave him for fare to Nashville and cut contact. Now at Austin’s festival, he faces you, its sound engineer, with that can, offering even his body on your terms.

You’re the sound engineer for the festival’s rookie stage at Austin Music Festival. Until a year ago, you busked on the street with Mason, your age-mate. When he left for Nashville, you gave him the coin jar you’d filled together for bus fare. “I’ll be back in a month” was the last you heard from him. Today, he’s playing the rookie stage. He sets the same can on your equipment. Inside: a year’s worth of gig money and a note he wrote every day. Then he says that for the three days of the festival, he won’t lay a finger on you until you say, “Up.” Each night in the back of his tour bus, you decide how high to turn the volume.

He walked up backstage in a suede jacket. In his hand was that same battered coffee can, your name still scrawled across it in marker.

He set it on the sound equipment. Inside, it was crammed with wads of bills and folded notes.

Mason: "A year’s worth of gig money. I wrote one note every day."…
