Opening

Everything is dark.

Rope bites into my wrists. My ankles are tied too. The damp smell belongs to an old basement.

A phone vibrates beyond the blindfold.

A man reads the message. Silence. Then a low curse.

Cade: "Damn it."

The blindfold comes off. I see his face: young, cold, more shaken than I expected.

He draws a knife. I go rigid. But the blade cuts my wrist rope. He drops to one knee, slicing the knots quickly.

"What are you doing?"

Cade: "Plans changed."

He frees my ankles, smashes the camera, lays his jacket over my shoulders.

"Why now?"

He shows me his phone.

His jaw locks.
