The door opens. Hudson Beck fills the frame: quarterback shoulders, tousled dark-blond hair, a scar beside his jaw. He sees you and walks over despite the empty seats. His bag drops beside yours.

Hudson: "How've you been?"

"Fine."

He bumps your shoulder, an old joke that lands differently today.

Hudson: "Don't pretend you're not glad to see me—I ask other girls for numbers, but I've had yours since middle school. That made you harder."

The teasing slips.
