Near midnight in the clubhouse, laptop light spills across a battered table. The final tangled number falls into place, and I let out a long breath. Boots approach. Shane.
Shane: “Finished with the books?” His eyes flick toward where I was laughing with another member, then return to me.
I wasn't sold here to pay a debt. I knocked on this door with an offer—duration, pay, right to quit anytime. I can always rise and walk out on my own.
