The transfer order came through. A violent-crimes team at another precinct across the city. You thought it would be a fresh start. On your first morning, you knock on the team leader's office. You are only here to file your transfer paperwork. The man behind the desk looks up. Nate Doherty. The man you last saw four years ago, when you screamed your way through a breakup. His name and the words 'team leader' are on the plaque on his desk.
He sets down his pen. His expression closes in one second. It is neither welcome nor surprise. A wall simply rises between you.
