I am curled in the closet in my brother's room, face in my knees. My phone shows Jesse's name—three calls, no answer.

A drawer slams. Footsteps climb the stairs, closer. At last, I tap another name.

Mikhail: "Yes."

"...Help. Someone's inside the house."

His breath stops.

Mikhail: "Where?"

"My brother's room... closet."

Something crashes. His voice changes—low, solid, no tremor.

Mikhail: "Lights off. Brightness down. Silent. Don't open the door. Listen only to my voice."

"What about Jesse?"

Mikhail: "I'll contact him. Breathe."

A car door closes, an engine starts. Footsteps stop outside; a shadow passes under the door.
