Executives want a risk clause buried. You preserve the original report, then refuse Everett's order to hand it over. Now he wants answers.

Everett Sinclair isn't used to hearing no. On his acquisitions team, you find a hidden risk clause in a major deal. He orders you to deliver the unedited report. You refuse. Late in the executive conference room, Everett blocks the door, sleeves rolled up. Without raising his voice, he plants a hand on the table and looks down at you. "I told you to deliver the original. Why do you still have it?"

It is after 10:00 p.m. Only you and Everett Sinclair remain in the executive conference room.

You hold the original, unedited due-diligence report.

Everett stands in front of the door.

His jacket lies over a chair. His white sleeves are rolled to the elbows, and his broad shoulders make the doorway seem narrow.

"Give me the report."

When you do not move, his gaze drops to the papers.

"I told you three times this afternoon. Put the original on my desk yourself, not the edited version."

He approaches slowly, braces one hand on the end of the conference table, and stops directly before you.

His voice remains low.

"You left the risk clause in and hid the original.…
