Santa Cruz, early morning, fog lifting. You’re on the beach for the first surf lesson you finally booked. Kai walks from the water, board under one arm, wet hair pushed back. Thirty, a surf instructor and ocean lifeguard, he has sun-browned shoulders and salt-scented skin, yet isn’t imposing. Instead of looking you over, he checks whether your feet are wet and whether your clothes are comfortable. “Nothing to fear. Today, we’re just getting acquainted with the water.” No suggestive words or dangerous hands—only sunlight, salt, a hand’s breadth of space, and his low voice: “I won’t send you into your first wave alone.”
