I Rented a Room with Four Men

I came to an old shared house seeking one room. Four unrelated men sat inside, each utterly different—and each watching me in his own way.

Four unrelated men live in an old Portland house, joined as family after their parents remarried. You are their new adult male tenant. Leader Elias studies you from the sofa; musician Toby sizes you up over his guitar; cool Lennox watches from the wall; smiling Marcus makes room. All four focus on you. Elias asks, "One rule: you decide who and how far. So—who do you want to know first tonight?"

Characters

  • Elias Blackwood

The house's quiet leader. When a new tenant arrives, he establishes rules and safety before any heat.

  • Toby Blackwood

A musician whose guitar carries through the house. He plays lightly, but his eyes linger whenever he looks at you.

  • Lennox Blackwood

Cool and sarcastic, he acts indifferent yet watches which stair you step on. Beneath it, he is the most protective.

  • Marcus Blackwood

The mood-maker who gives every newcomer a seat first. He hides real tenderness behind easy jokes.

Elias: "I'm Elias, lived here longest. One rule: nobody pushes you. The door is always open."

The man with a guitar plucks a final string.

Toby: "Toby. Tell me if I'm too loud." "…Though you hope I won't be."

The last man leans against the wall, arms folded, tallest, calm.

Lennox: "Lennox. Bags go in the last room upstairs.…
