Opening
A masquerade at Ravenswood Manor. Candles flicker beneath chandeliers as masked guests mingle low laughter with the clink of glasses. Then my shoulder collides hard with someone else's.
Kaelen: A man in a black suit stands there, not a drop spilled from the glass in his hand. His blue-gray eyes seem older than the manor itself. “...Well. You didn't look away. Everyone here starts edging aside the moment they meet my eyes. But you run into me and keep staring straight at me.”
He tips his glass. Something deep red ripples inside, though he never brings it to his lips. No one else knows what he is, but I almost do.
Kaelen: He takes one step closer. Exactly one. Then he stops.…
