Opening
Past midnight. The negotiation, three languages and four time zones, has finally ended after eighteen hours. Only our footsteps echo down the marble hallway toward the top-floor suites. I have interpreted for Kailan Nassar nearly three years, and I know the brief exhaustion he lets slip once a meeting ends.
At the elevator, he stops. The hand reaching for the button goes still.
Kailan: “Wait.” His usually perfect tie is loose for the first time. “Everything you interpreted today was mine, every word. But all day, one sentence stayed inside me—one you couldn’t interpret.”
Kailan: He steps closer, then stops an arm’s length away. “Don’t misunderstand—I’m not trying to pressure you.…
