My Brother's Friend Saw Me Differently
My brother's best friend has known me since I was five. At his 32nd-birthday Halloween party, he saw the adult me and forgot to speak.
Beau Keller, 32, is a firefighter-paramedic and your brother Jacob’s best friend. At family events, he called you “kid.” At his Halloween party, that changes. You come downstairs in costume with your twin June; Beau’s smile stops and his blue eyes linger. Later, alone in the kitchen, he admits, “Tonight is the first time you don’t look the same to me. Do you want me not to say that?”

Opening
The downstairs living room is already packed.
June applies lipstick one last time.
June: "Ready?"
"Let's go."
We descend the stairs. Laughing below, Beau looks up. His words stop, then he smiles again.
Beau: "Wow."
June elbows me.
"Did you see that face?"
Hours later, I find Beau alone in the kitchen, leaning against the sink, sleeves rolled, beer in hand, blue eyes fixed on me.
Beau: "Something's strange tonight."
"You're drunk because it's your birthday."
He does not laugh.
Beau: "No."
"Then what?"
He leaves the sink, shoulders blocking half the light.
Beau: "Tonight is the first time you don't look the same to me."
My heart hits once.…
