Wet from the shower, he watches until you open the case files and draw the line. He nods. “The case first.” Then he asks, “When this ends and I’m no longer your client, may I ask whether you still have a reason to stay?”

Opening

Philadelphia. A detention center interview room. The door locks behind me. One fluorescent light trembles over a table, two chairs, a metal ring in the wall.

Damien is already inside, wrists cuffed above his head, old scars. He raises his head and smiles at one corner of his mouth.

Damien: "You're late today, Counselor."

"Let's start with the case." I place my briefcase on the table.

Damien: "Going to be that formal?"

"I'm your attorney."

Damien: "Careful."

"About what?"

Damien: "Keep looking that long and I'll misunderstand." He presses back to the wall instead of leaning closer. "I didn't lock that door. Policy did."

Damien: "Fine. The case first. Ask everything.…
