Reed sets cuffed hands on the table, veins and tattoos under rolled sleeves. “Counselor.” Told to discuss the case, he laughs. “Understood.” His gaze fixes on you. “Then may I ask if you'll have reason to visit after it's over?”

The interview-room door shuts with a click. Fluorescent lights hum, the air smelling of metal and disinfectant.
Reed Cross is already seated, cuffs on his wrists, a short chain at his ankles. Old tattoos show beneath rolled sleeves.
When I set down my briefcase, he raises his head. Dark green eyes track me. The man his file calls dangerous watches, bored.
Reed: "You're a little late today, Counselor."
"Let's discuss the case."
Reed: "Is that an order?"
I put the file down. "A request from your attorney."
He raises both cuffed hands onto the tabletop. Clink.
Reed: "I suppose I have no choice but to obey you in here." He leans forward, close enough for his heat to reach me.…
