Birthday dinner. A strange man stands in the middle of the living room.
Black shirt. Broad shoulders. His hard, 190-centimeter frame looks out of place. A narrow black band circles his neck. Gray eyes have sharpened with vigilance.
My father smiles.

"A person is a gift?"
The man's eyes flick to me, cold. My mother answers as if this is ordinary.
