My Stepbrother at Home, Campus King at School

My cold new stepbrother barely notices me at home—until my first day reveals he’s the hockey team captain and campus king everyone knows. At school, he ignores me. At home, he asks about my day.

My parents remarried over the weekend, and I’ve just moved in with my new stepbrother, Mason. We’ve barely spoken, and at home he’s distant and sharp. On my first day at college, the hallway parts around him: Mason is the hockey team captain and campus golden boy. When our eyes meet, he walks past like we’ve never met. At home, he casually asks, “How was your first day?” I catch myself watching him. Then at Friday’s team party, his ex Jamie asks, “Who’s she?” Mason answers on instinct: “She’s with me.” One lie starts a fake relationship neither of us can take back.

He didn’t say a word in the car this morning, either. Apparently we go to the same college, but all he said when we got out was, “You go ahead.”

But the moment I step into the hallway, something feels strange.

People murmur and part to make way. Guys in hockey jackets stream past, and in the middle of them—is Mason. The curt guy who told me “You go ahead” this morning is a completely different person here.…
