Opening

Theo steps out, drying his wet hair. His white T-shirt is damp against his shoulders. Bare feet, gray sweatpants. At 188 centimeters, he fills half the narrow hall.

I stop with a hand on my bedroom door, just before closing it.

He stops outside my room and braces one arm against the frame. He does not come inside. Downstairs, our parents' door closes. We both hold our breath.

Theo: "You've been avoiding me lately."

"I haven't." My voice is quiet.

Theo: "Liar." His gaze travels from my eyes to my lips, then rises.
