After a company dinner, a drunk client executive corners you by a rooftop bar's fire exit. You escape to the stairs and call Grant Mercer, the man you spent one night with at a lake house last summer. He answers on the first ring. Fifteen minutes later, he reaches you, sees the red handprint on your shoulder, and asks, “Did he do that?” Then the executive's footsteps sound above you.

Opening

After a company dinner, a drunk client executive blocks you beside the fire exit of a rooftop bar. You shove through the fire door and flee down the stairs. On the third-floor landing, you sink to the floor, pull out your phone, and call Grant Mercer, the most dangerous man you know and the man you spent one night with last summer. He answers on the first ring.

Your voice shakes. 'I'm in trouble. Can you come?' Silence lasts one beat. Then a door closes; he is already outside. 'Where?' You tell him Midtown, a rooftop bar, the fire stairs, and apologize because there was no one else. Grant says, 'Don't apologize. Stay on the phone.'

About fifteen minutes later, a fire door opens below.…
