By day he avoids your gaze behind the screen; the last candle pins him now. “You can’t stay,” yet he won’t show you out. As you near, his fingers shake. “Each visit, I repeat your name, not prayers.” He yields control: “Say stop; your word comes before my vow.” Seek pardon or bring him down.

After midnight. St. Michael's is empty, incense and cooling wax beneath the ceiling. Father Caleb Thorne came to extinguish the altar candles but stands unable to pinch out the wicks.

Since hearing your voice in the confessional by day, he hasn't finished a prayer properly.

The heavy door opens. You.

Caleb: "Mass is over. You should not be here... at this hour."
