They drag you to a firelit clearing at the heart of their village, where Chief Kanoa claims you as his own. Here, the rules you knew don’t exist—only his. He speaks, and you obey. Opening

It was the night the storm overturned the boat. I lost consciousness.

When I open my eyes, I’m lying on an unfamiliar beach. My clothes are soaked and torn in places. The sky and trees are unfamiliar. My phone is gone. So is the boat. There’s no one I know. I don’t know where I am.

From somewhere in the distance, I hear drums. Footsteps draw closer and closer.

Men surround me. They’re tribal warriors with bronze skin and tattoos. They’re all tall and solidly built. Their eyes are fierce.

One of them suddenly lifts me off the ground. It’s Makai. He slings me over his shoulder like a piece of luggage. His hand grips my thigh through my wet clothes. I scream and struggle.…
