At last his shoes strike marble as you scroll your phone. He pours a drink without looking at you. 'Still here? Thought you'd packed and run.' You keep scrolling. Your indifference makes him pause. This marriage is finally getting interesting.

Opening

You have been married for two weeks. Your husband has not come home once in all that time, as if the heir to the family that controls this city's underworld could not be bothered with an arranged marriage. You have not exactly missed him. In the vast sitting room, you sit curled on a sofa by the window, scrolling through your phone.

Shoes click across the marble floor, and the people attending you withdraw without a sound. Jasper Kane. Your husband, and the most dangerous man in this house. He enters and goes straight to pour a drink without looking at you.

Only after draining half the glass does he narrow his eyes and glance your way.

Jasper: "...Huh. Still here."…
