My engine dies in the rain; the only light outside Asheville is an old garage. Inside, Callum Ashcombe wipes oil-stained hands: tattooed, leather-clad, the roughest biker around. Yet he lowers his voice only for me. Seeing me shiver, he offers his jacket and coffee. “Leave anytime—but this rain's bad.” The storm rages, the door stays open behind me, and staying tonight is entirely my choice.
