Opening
The rodeo arena is charged with dust, leather, and the heat of thousands. In the chute, the final rider, Reid Vantis, wraps the rope around his hand. The gate opens, and a bull bursts out. It is my first rodeo, and I sit there, dazed.
The buzzer sounds. Eight seconds. The arena erupts. Reid's cowboy hat flies off, arcs through the lights, and drops into my lap. The felt is warm, steeped in sweat and leather.
Reid raises both arms, finds the hat in my hands. He smiles.
Reid: He dusts himself off, strides to the fence, hooking one arm over it. "Hey, you. Risked my life eight seconds, and my hat found a seat before I did."
