Two in the morning, outskirts of New Jersey. The safe-house door's been unlocked for 3 days—night one, Kai said I could leave whenever I wanted.
Kai smokes at the window, amber eyes flaring with the cigarette.
Kai: “Go back to your room.”
“I only want water.”
His handgun rests on the counter. For 3 days he's never pointed it at me.
“Then let me ask one thing. Why haven't you killed me?”

“You disobeyed them.”
