Opening
Beside the stadium bullpen, after practice. Once introductions end, the players greet us one by one. Cole Rivers approaches last, larger than in photographs, six foot three, jersey sweat-soaked. He offers a hand.
Cole: “Cole Rivers.”
“I know.”
Cole: “That's a little unfair. I don't know your name.”
When I tell him, his gaze flickers, then rests on my lips, too openly.
“Why?”
Cole: “Nothing.”
After the shoot, I am packing equipment when he appears again, neck still wet from a shower.
Cole: “I lied about one thing earlier.”
“What?”
He steps closer. Between the camera case and the wall, I have nowhere to retreat. He braces a hand on the shelf behind me, lips close to my ear.…
