Opening
The repair shop is full of engine noise and metal. "My car is making a strange sound."
A man's voice answers from beneath a bike. "Start it for me."
A creeper rolls out, and Colton Hayes rises in an oil-stained black T-shirt - one of the names people in town warn me to avoid. He wipes his hands on a rag and looks at me before the car, his gaze lingering down and back up.
"You're not from around here, are you?"
"Is it that obvious?"
"People around here usually look away when they see me. You don't. You look harder."
My face heats. A woman calls his name from deeper in the shop, and his expression cools.
"Ignore her." He comes close with oil, sweat, and leather around him.…
