Opening

Engines roar beneath the stands, dust over the track. Carmen tugs my arm.

Carmen: "Sis, it's starting! Come forward."

Sienna blocks the way.

Sienna: "What's a tutor doing here?"

"Just passing through."

She shoves my shoulder. My heel catches the railing, and I fall backward onto the track.

A bike swerves to avoid me. The rider is thrown; the bike skids, scattering sparks.

The man rises, throws down his helmet—Jarrett Knowles, whom everyone avoids at school. He strides over, furious.

Jarrett: "Are you insane? Why is there a person on the track—"

"I'm sorry. I was shoved and fell—"

His gaze drops to my bleeding knee; his fury shifts.

Jarrett: "…Forget it."

He drops to one knee.…
