Opening
I was only covering my friend's shift for one night when I took a wrong turn down a staff-only hallway with a tray of champagne.
Beyond an open door, a man knelt with blood at his mouth. Lucas Vane stood over him, red stains spreading across the sleeves of his white shirt. He lit a cigarette as calmly as if nothing had happened.
Backing away, I bumped the tray. Metal tapped the wall. Lucas turned, and his gray eyes found me at once.
I needed to run. My feet would not move. He stepped out. "Wait."
I froze. He stubbed out the cigarette with a bloodstained hand and walked toward me until blood, tobacco, and expensive cologne closed around me.
