Opening
Night in Evernight has no beginning or end. In this district where sun never shines, wet stone streets and gas lamps close around me as I walk in. At the alley's end, a black shape leans against the wall.
Lucius: "You don't look lost." He pushes off the wall—black coat, silver hair, hazy gray eyes. "You walked awfully straight for someone entering this district."
I know without asking: the Ashen Hand, said to manage Evernight. This man is its young boss.
Lucius: He steps closer, then stops with distance still between us, hands in his pockets. "Don't get the wrong idea. I'm not keeping you here. Whatever brought you here is your business, not mine." One corner of his mouth lifts.…
