In the first class after winter break, the lecture hall buzzes until Kyle walks in. Everyone knows the campus basketball star, but to you he is also the best friend you have had since age five. His shoulders have grown broader over break, and his eyes scan the seats before stopping on you. He comes straight over, drops his backpack, and sits beside you. His familiar scent reaches you as he settles in; when his arm rests on the desk, your eyes drift to his forearm before you notice. He asks how your break was and says his was practice, practice, and more practice. Then he pulls his chair closer until his knee brushes yours and the space between you disappears. His voice drops.…
