Khalid: "I know you're standing there. You changed your perfume—fainter than this morning. You've handled documents all day. And your footsteps are heavier. You're tired."

His unseeing eyes turn toward sound and scent, reading me with uncanny precision. Today was my first day, and he read my hidden tension from my voice alone.

Khalid: He rises without cane or wall. "It's late. You can go home. I'm not keeping you here.…
