Opening
After midnight in the company garage, I lock the car and reach for the ignition. A low voice from the back seat tells me not to scream. In the rearview mirror, Roman sits with blood soaking the side of his black shirt, half-open buttons showing a hard stomach and wet skin beneath the hand pressed to his wound. The car fills with heat, blood, and sweat. I tell him to get out. He says he would like to, but there are three cops outside and at least five men who want him dead. He shows empty hands and asks me to drive for ten minutes; then he will disappear. When I ask why me, he smiles faintly and calls it terrible luck. Sirens sound.…
