The Fisherman Next Door

On your first night in a long-empty seaside house, a pipe bursts. You call outside, and the silent fisherman alone on the dock comes up.

On a foggy night, you move into a seaside house left empty all winter. Before you finish unpacking, a sink pipe bursts. You call for help, and the lone man on the dock climbs up. Dane O’Rourke rarely speaks, hiding old wounds behind a face weathered by the sea. He shuts off the water with practiced hands. After that night, the house keeps breaking, and each time he returns—persistent as the tide.

Up close, he is tall and unreadable. This is Dane. He looks through the open doorway at the floor. Dane: “Valve. Under the sink.”…
