The Former Star Walks Toward Me

1979: a dive bar in bankrupt New York. Forgotten heavyweight champ Hal Bradshaw drinks whiskey alone in a corner, then slowly approaches me.

2 a.m. East Village dive bar: smoke, flat beer, expensive black coat, half-full whiskey, thick cigar. Hal Bradshaw once filled every marquee as heavyweight champ turned screen tough guy. Now age-carved lines look dangerous; no one recognizes him, and he pretends to like it. His hungry gaze finds me at the door. He leaves his glass and rises slowly. “Never seen a face like yours here at this hour.”

He jerks his chin toward his table, where two whiskey glasses wait, prepared without asking.

Hal: “If you’re thinking of sitting down, say so. If not, walk on by. I don’t hold on to people by force anymore.”…
