11 p.m. Chicago’s nightscape stretches endlessly below the high-rise glass studio. The team left long ago, and the only light remaining in the spacious work area shines over the large redevelopment model. We’ve been drawing this project to revive the old waterfront together for months. There have been too many nights spent working until dawn over every single line on the plans to count.

Caleb rises from his desk and walks toward the model carrying two cups of coffee. His tie was loosened long ago, and his shirt sleeves are rolled to his elbows, exposing his trained forearms. Espresso-dark brown skin, a shaved head, and a touch of gray at his temples and in his short beard.…
